At one-time years ago there was
talk of Dunne Stores coming to Kildare town. We were lucky that they
chose to go else where otherwise we would not have Martin Cowley here.
Martin Cowleys supermarket is an experience you do not get in a lot
of big supermarkets. His is a very light and airy shop and it is so
clean you really could eat your dinner off the floor. From his hot
food counter to his deli counter to his salad and fresh vegetable
department to his fresh meat counter. There is a fresh bakery department,
a hardware department, a kitchen department, a dairy department and
to top it all there is a community notice board on display.

If ever a pub deserves to be called the centre of the community then this pub does. Teasie Doyle has been involved with the continues growth of the town for years. As a prominent member of the Derby Festival committee it grew to what it is today. Nearly every group and organisation in the town has used her large room over the pub. Future councillors (and even a T.D. or two) made their first foray into politics in the room above the pub. Go in there any night (or during the day on weekends) and sit around a potbellied stove and watch all the sport on T.V. or play a game of cards or if you want just have a drink. |

If ever a pub deserved a Michelin star in the good pub guide it is Boland's. The food and friendly service is out of this world. During lunchtime on Thursday it is nearly impossible to get a seat because of the amount of people waiting to have a meal. Boland's brown soda bread would win prises in any high-class food competitions anywhere. The pub is another one of the old style Kildare town pubs that started off as combined pub and grocery shop. I think that at one time in the past they sold animal feed and seed as well. Betty and her son Steven do deserve the Michelin star for the food and the service in the pub. |
|
This is another pub/grocery shop that goes back to the 1800s. Jarlet Boyle runs the family pub now. His father Johnny Boyle was known the length and breath of Ireland. His life story would be great reading. As well as running his pub Jarlet has time to keep bees and make and sell prise-winning honey. He is also one of the first persons people go to when they are looking for charity donations. |

CILL DARE CONTRACT CLEANERS The first thing people think of when the weather
starts to get cold, is to make sure that there is coal and briquettes
in the shed. The second thing they do is look up the phone number for
Seanie Flynn. Once Seannie has cleaned your chimney you do not have
to worry about the danger of it going on fire. When they leave your
house it is as clean as it was when they entered. Ring them then you
know your house will be safe. |

Top Nolan's started off as a grocery shop and a pub. People came in to dotheir shopping and have a drink while the wife got her order made up. Most people who came into town then only shopped once a week. It was common to see pony or ass and cart outside Top Nolan's. Sometimes the pony would be across the road in the forge getting shod. When Peter Gibbons took over the pub completely changed. The people who liked an Irish atmosphere and Irish music went there in their droves. It became very hard to get in the doors on a weekend as it was packed and all the best Irish music lovers went there. People have visited Tops from all corners of the world because they had heard of it in their own country. Whenever any group or committee need help Top's is always one of the first places they go to for help and they are not turned away empty handed. Like most pub's in Kildare town it is a very enjoyable experience to go there for a good night out |
