Kildare town soccer club
Kildare, Co. Kildare, Ireland.
Contact:
Kildare town A.F.C. started in the season 1966/67.
The club has grown from strength to strength over the years due in no small part to the committee of its members. The club started in Lenihans field, where every second Sunday hundreds of people from the town and the surrounding area came to see their match of the day and they were never disappointed. Some of the early members of the club included ex schoolboy international Jimmy Mullen and Murty Moran who went on to play with Manchester united in his early days. Some of the more notable locals who played with the club were, Mick Keerin formerly of Shamrock Rovers and Bohs and Ireland, Jimmy Gregg of Shamrock Rovers and Paddy Duffy, Drumcondra and Boh's.
The original black jerseys of the club were replaced with
red and black due to the generous sponsorship of McBertie Kerr. These were
also the riding colours of the Kerr's, and thus Kildare town became known
as the red devils. This was the first team strip and the interest in the
club was such that the club had to enter another team into the metro league
in 1968.
In 1980 Kildare town A.F.C. Decided to join the A.V.l. And in 1983 achieved
runner up in their division .
After Lenihans field Kildare town A.F.C. Moved to greener pastures in Woodside park but had to move to temporary grounds to make way for industry (Black and Decker),before finally coming to rest at Rathbride road where they now own the grounds and clubhouse with two full size pitches and two all weather 6 a side pitches which are floodlit.
Kildare town has built a formidable youth section and this is evident in
the growth of the club over the years. This is accepted by all as being
the very basis of the existence of any club in any sort of sport. The members
of Kildare town A.F.C. are actively involved in under age soccer from u/9
through to u/18.the numbers reaching as many as 150.
