Round
Towers G.F.C.
St Johns v Maddenstown on March 10 1888 was the first recorded match in
the history of Gaelic football in Kildare town. this game was played in
Grogans field on the French Furze road, and ended up with a victory for
the Johns. The score was 1-3 to no score. Outstanding players on that team
were, P Anderson, M Farrell, J Twichen, M Byrne, J Davis, M Cahill, T Hannonand,
P Talbot (Capt.) father of Stephen Talbot famous for his bicycle procession
to the county finals in the fifties and grandfather of Stephen who re-enacted
the cycle procession in 1996.
The name changed to sons of St Brigids on the 24th of March 1888. Their
first game was against Clane in the first round of the championship. Clane
won 2-3 to no score. In the same year sons of St Brigids Kildare played
sons of St Brigids Kilcullen in the T.Harrington (Milltown) tournament and
because there was no score at full time ,an extra 20min was played and Kilcullen
won by 1 point to no score.
There was a lot of controversy in the first years of sons of St Brigids.
Some of the leading figures in the club had close links with nationalist's
ideals and the rights of tenants. J.T.Heffernan (chairman) (grandfather
of local business people Eddie and Eilish Heffernan) J Cosgrove and P Talbot.
J T Heffernan was arrested in 1888 for his involvement in the Clongory campaign.
Some G.a.a. Clubs passed resolutions that no games be played while J.T.
was in custody. He spent two or three days in Kilkenny jail. When he was
released a large crowd greeted him at Kildare railway station. In the early
1900 the name changed to Kildare shamrocks. It was to change one more time
to the present name The Round Towers.
